Kirby Jenner (2020) – TV Review

This Quibi show, which inserts a fictional male Jenner sibling into existing Keeping Up With The Kardashians footage, is exactly the sort of show that represents why everyone mocked Quibi to start with.

In all fairness, if you are the type of person who really likes reality tv and specifically the life of the Jenners/Kardashians, then maybe this is something you will get some amusement from.

However, for most people, this will just play as a totally unfunny and incredibly unnecessary attempt to find ways to get even more content out of reality tv and the shallow world it inhabits.

One interesting thing was Kendall Jenner, who produces the show and is the only member of the family who films new footage to mix the real life events and ‘Kirby’s story’ together and she is surprisingly good in her line delivery. The last thing we want is a Kardashian/Jenner trying to be an actress, but it was something I noticed.

Rick and Morty Season 4, Part 2 (2020) – TV Review

Rick and Morty is regarded by many as one of the best animated shows on TV right now, and I would have to agree. While I don’t think it is quite the ‘intellectual masterpiece’ some try and offer it up as, I do think it’s a very well written and inventive show that clearly loves the sci-fi and pop culture that it is parodying (and that is absolutely a compliment not a criticism in any way).

In this season, which was set in two parts, we have a wide variety of adventures, some of which worked and some that didn’t, but the ones that did work, were really strong and made it a impressive season of TV overall.

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are very specific and talented creative voices in this medium and I hope they keep experimenting and try to better themselves as the show continues.

I found the finale, with Space Beth and the ‘arcs’ for each character particularly impressive and was a great example of what the show can be at its best.

I hope the wait for season 5 is a lot shorter than the wait for season 4 was.

Killing Eve Season 4 – What should and shouldn’t happen?

Killing Eve season 3 has finished and the wait for the fourth begins. With this in mind, I will be doing a weekly rewatch of the show starting tonight with the first ever episode, and this inspired me to do this post, which will be split into two parts. This post will focus on what should/shouldn’t happen in season 4, and the next post will focus on actual predictions.

After this, I will stop writing about the show until we receive any further updates on the next season and the future of the show.

I have made 12 points (In honour of the twelve) with 6 should and 6 shouldn’t do things for Laura Neal’s Killing Eve season 4.

Should

1. Explore Villanelle and Eve as a genuine couple, and look at the dynamics and how that would work.

2. Feature Phoebe Waller-Bridge in a cameo role, although having her as a genuine supporting character (I.e. head of the 12) would probably be a bit too on the nose and feel too much like a wink to the camera, but a small cameo could be so effective.

3. Be about Eve, Villanelle and potentially Carolyn/Konstantin teaming up to take on the 12.

4. Feature funny, carefree, childish, adventurous Villanelle from the first two seasons. After the fascinating and necessary arc Villanelle went on in Season 3 to really discover herself, it would be nice to see her not suffering this season and return to the care free woman she was at the start of the show.

5. Give us another scene with Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Fiona Shaw, and Kim Bodnia all together.

6. It should set up season 5 as the final season. This would allow for the plot to naturally play out without dragging it on too long, and would also allow the in demand Jodie Comer to continue her meteoric Hollywood rise and not have to turn down multiple films because of the show, but will also give fans enough satisfying content from the show. It would obviously be a dream to have Phoebe Waller-Bridge return to write the final season, but I imagine that is very unlikely right now.

Bonus – Bring back Elena.

Shouldn’t

1. Keep Villanelle and Eve separate again for most of the season, this has happened a lot for good reason but the show is at its best when they are together and the story now demands they are together instead of more ‘cat and mouse’.

2. End with Villanelle dying. It isn’t shocking and it won’t be satisfying, think of a better development of her arc. Killing her would be a huge mistake.

3. Feature Ruby Rose in any role. The rumours have started but I hope that’s all they are.

4. Feature the return of Niko or Geraldine. They are now unnecessary and don’t need to take up screen time.

5. Try and be funny with the location title cards. This really took me out of some of the episodes and it didn’t work, as the title cards have been really effective and simple in previous seasons.

6. Sideline Eve in favour of supporting characters. She’s the titular character and Sandra Oh deserves season 1 level screen time again.

Long live Killing Eve. Long live Villaneve.

Killing Eve Q&A – What did we learn?

The major cast and crew of Killing Eve just took part in a live Q&A with BAFTA to discuss the newest season, and it proved surprisingly informative.

The first thing to say is how the cast of this show all seem like genuinely nice people who love what they do, and love working together, which is really refreshing to see.

Due to the fact that season 4 is still being written, we didn’t get too many hints where the season will go, but we did get one major bombshell from Jodie Comer – that she thinks Eve and Villanelle walk away from each other at the end.

In a sentence that will have broken the hearts of thousands of fans (myself included but it’s important to remember it was just a personal interpretation and not necessarily how the plot will play out), Comer described how she saw it as a final glance at each other on the bridge and then they walk away, as opposed to the apparent decision to stay together we were all celebrating originally.

However, Jodie was quick to stress that is only her opinion and she has no actual idea what happened yet, and Sandra Oh seemed to imply she thought Villanelle and Eve had realised they could only trust each other now, therefore hinting at a different decision.

Another great moment was when Sandra Oh brought into realisation something fans have long hoped for and discussed, that Phoebe Waller-Bridge could guest star (leader of the 12? Villanelle victim? Villanelle lover?). The options are endless but it would certainly be a moment in TV history if it did happen!

We also got some great behind the scenes stories about the filming and the way the cast and crew approach the show, and you can really tell the effort and love that goes into the show.

In the end, it was a really interesting chat, and has got me even more excited for any news about season 4 as the hiatus between seasons begins.

The Thick Of It Season 3 (2009) – TV Review

This is the season where the show really comes into its own and establishes itself as one of the best comedies in recent time.

The dialogue is sharp, offensive and cutting, and it is delivered by an incredibly talented cast that provide some of the most laugh out loud moments you could ever hope to find.

The re-jigged cast and story inject a real sense of energy in the show and it unravels in very unpredictable ways.

Peter Capaldi won a BAFTA for this role and you can see why, his non stop anger and aggression is impressive and some of the lines he comes out with are so ridiculous, scandalous and funny that you simply can’t believe what you’re seeing.

Football, Prince William, and Our Mental Health (2020) – TV Review

This BBC documentary followed Prince William for a year as he got in touch with people from all walks of life, to discuss mental health, and specifically the positive and negative effects football can have on that for men.

Suicide is one of the biggest killers of men under 45 and mental health still remains a somewhat taboo subject, even though it effects so many people. The idea that men need to ‘man up’ instead of talk about how they are feeling and seeking help is now over, we must be a more open and caring society.

The documentary looks at how grassroots football can be used to bring men together to distract themselves and also find a sense of comradeship where they can openly discuss the struggles they are having.

However, it also briefly explores the negative impacts of professional football and how many professional players are still forced to suffer in silence or deal with the consequences of speaking up.

This is the sort of things that members of the royal family should use their platforms for, as they can raise awareness and hopefully make genuine positive change in the world.

The Full nominations are in and the detailed list is below.

The Simpsons Season 5 (1993) – TV Review

The Simpsons is an institution and it is a part of pop culture that nearly all of us have consumed in some way, at some point in our lives.

However, beyond that, it is also simply a really great show, especially in the first decade or so that it has been showing.

In this season, the show is established enough to be able to make meta references to itself, experiment with topics and themes, and flesh out the world of the show by giving episodes to more supporting characters, as opposed to relying on Homer being the centre of every story.

It genuinely hilarious at times and is one of the ultimate ‘easy watches’ which is what makes it perfect for this stressful time the world is going through right now.

A personal stand out here is not necessarily the funniest episode, but the episode where Homer and Grandpa go on the road selling a magic product and learn a lot about their relationship has been one that has stuck with me for years.

BAFTA TV Awards 2020 Nominations – Predictions

With the BAFTA TV awards now set to take place on 31st July (with no audience and new host Richard Ayoade), and the nominations due to be announced on 4th June, I will be doing some coverage beforehand looking at the shows that should be nominated and then predicting the shows that will, as well as then revealing the actual nominations when they are announced.

An important thing to point out is that the eligibility for shows is that they have to have been aired in the UK from 1st January 2019-31st December 2019, so shows like Normal People won’t be eligible until next year and it will be season 2 of something like Killing Eve that is competition, even though season 3 of that show has now already finished airing in the UK.

BAFTA TV nominates 4 contenders in each category so I am matching that pattern, and I have also put the contender in bold that I think will win each category.

This post will look at the things I predict will be nominated in the major categories (there are many other categories and I will cover them when the nominations are announced).

Check out my post from earlier today looking at what I think should be nominated and win.
