A Walt Disney Picture, Written by Bill Kelly, Directed by Kevin Lima.
This film, about a classic Disney animated princess thrown into the real live action world, is both a homage and parody of Disney’s iconic film, and it manages to carefully walk the line between homage and parody very well, and with the addition some catchy music and strong cast, makes for a really fun film.
I always find the key to the Disney Live Action fairytale films is the cast. If they can get the lead casting right, it can usually cover a lot of cracks, and they got it perfect here. Amy Adams is not only one of the best actresses of our generation but is also so perfect for this innocent, kind, and quirky character.
The rest of the cast is good, with Susan Sarandon underused and Patrick Dempsey using her charismatic charm to good effect as the co-lead. The other stand out in a supporting role is James Marsden, as the ridiculously over the top prince thrown into a modern world to find his princess. Marsden perfect rly overplays the role and shows again (after Dead To Me recently) he was too long stuck in ‘leading man’ roles and he thrives as a comedic supporting character.
This is a low stakes and thoroughly enjoyable Disney adventure.
