A Bleecker Street Picture, Written and Directed by Kitty Green.
Arriving earlier this year with the tag of “first film to address the Weinstein scandal” you would expect a film packed full of drama and big flashy scenes set in Hollywood, but this ain’t what Kitty Green has done.
Instead, it is a Weinstein adjacent film focusing on one stressful day in the life of an assistant for a big Hollywood boss. The film is a slow burn that carefully details the multiple subtle put downs and insinuations this young woman has to deal with.
We also see her witness another young woman, who unlike her has little qualifications for the role, be brought in by the boss and as the film develops, you quickly understand why and how toxic a scenario it is for everyone.
The whole film is carried by the brilliant Julia Garner, who has very few showy scenes but the slow eroding of her confidence and happiness is perfectly portrayed. Garner is a huge talent.
This isn’t the film many will be expecting but it’s a very well made and purposefully difficult to watch little drama.
